Hockey Nutrition Tips from a Collegiate Strength Coach

Since joining Quinnipiac University in 2008, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Brijesh Patel has enhanced the program through his philosophy of “year-round preparation.” This is especially true when it comes to nutrition.

“Nutrition is a huge part of any athletes development because you’re only as good as your ability to recover,” says Patel. “The way I look at nutrition is not just for fueling, but also as a huge part of recovery. If you’re recovered and have the proper fuel, you’re going to be able to train hard and work hard that day.”

Patel was one of the early adopters of UCAN’s revolutionary energy products, which he first tried on himself and then with his athletes in 2010.

“It’s the only product on the market that offers a complex carbohydrate that doesn’t affect your insulin levels the way normal simple starches do,” says Patel. “You want to try to avoid those peaks and crashes with your insulin and blood sugar levels as much as possible because if your blood sugar levels drop, it’s going to be harder to start generating energy.”

Patel has his athletes use UCAN Performance Energy Powders and UCAN Energy Bars before workouts and games, and UCAN Performance Energy + Protein for recovery after workouts and games.

“UCAN is a product that’s going to be with us for a long time and anyone who’s not using it could be missing a key edge,” says Patel. “It’s a product that can help from an energy and performance standpoint as much as possible.”
